Memoria was the result of my first gamejam. It was also my first time directing/managing a group of people, as well as writing. I remember it being pretty stressful and a bit disappointing because my scope was waaay too big, and I couldn't write up a proper conclusion to the story. That said, it helped solidify the kind of atmosphere I'd like to further explore and create in future works.
Two years later, I'd participate in my second gamejam, this time just as the writer/art director. Such an original name right? We hadn't really thought of a name till the last minute and I threw this out, having completely forgotten my first game was called Memoria LOL. But we liked it well enough that it stuck, so it worked out. I'm personally pretty proud of how complete and concise In Memoriam turned out, and it'd lead to our group forming the T.U.G.A. (Texas Underground Gaming Armory). Although we had plans for future games together, nothing's quite panned out yet, but I'd love to work with them again someday!
And a year after that, I'd take another shot at both directing and writing with Umbral Mideina. This time, I also did a chunk of the coding with RPG in a Box, as well as the pixel models. Figuring out a layout for the map was fun, as well as creating more intense atmospheres. The hard part was making it run well, which unfortunately, I was never able to really figure out. Definitely a skill issue on my part, but it may have also been an issue with RPG in a Box, as it wasn't necessarily intended to be a free-roam first-person shooter. Having Theta bring the characters to life with their beautiful art was amazing, as they've done the character art for all our past games as well. And this time, for music, we had my friend Ari put together a soundtrack that elevated the experience beyond. Making it all come together was really fun, and a bit stressful, but ultimately I was just happy to have my OCs pulled out of my head. Please check out Theta's work here.
